Arranging and composing
I make a large number of choral arrangements and transcriptions, and I have a smaller but growing output of original compositions. A small selection of my non-commissioned works are available online, but there are lots more if you're interested. [view] |
Micklegate Singers
I have a close association with this choir, and I act as occasional guest conductor, most notably for their Christmas concerts in 2008 and 2009. [view] |
Clerkes of All Saints
I direct this occasional liturgical choir based at the Anglo-Catholic church of All Saints North Street. We specialise in lesser-known Renaissance vocal music, which we combine with plainsong and often historically recreated liturgy. |
St Mary's Singers
This ambitious ten-voice choir meets for three weekends a year to learn challenging music from scratch and then perform them in concerts and services. I direct the group informally and sing tenor. [view] |
York Youth Chorus
I founded and directed York's youth choir from 2002 until 2004. We provided a supportive environment where young people could sing together and work towards performances. We were funded by the Lottery, the Local Network Fund, the University of York, and local businesses. |
Music engraving
'Engraving' is the technical term for the musical equivalent of typesetting, i.e. creating sheet music from which singers and players can perform. This is one of my more geeky hobbies, although it has also made me some money as a freelancer in the past. I have a separate website for this. [view] |
Theatre
I've been musical director for several stage productions, all with community youth or student theatre groups. I love theatre, but it's very demanding, so normally I only get involved in a show once every few years when I'm able to dedicate some time to it. It's normally 'just for fun' or for a relatively small fee. Between times I play percussion for G&S productions in York. |
Classical guitar
I teach guitar in the York area from beginner to grade 8, though I'm currently not looking for any more pupils. |
